Critically thinking about Generative AI

Sat Jan 04 2025 blognotesaitech

Happy fucking new year! I’m starting the year off strong with a post about AI. For a little while I was unsure how to feel about the topic, since it’s quite broad and there’s a flood of opinions.

But at this point, I am just pissed off and here’s me adding my opinion into the bucket as well.

What could be a technology used for good has become wasted on this garbage Generative AI that everyone is marvelling at.

This video sums up one Generative AI problem very well, the internet is littered with AI garbage. My social feeds are constantly flooded with the same posts praising boring generated videos and images.

It’s not fucking art, you didn’t fucking make it and it’s just pointless soulless garbage that you are passing off as some revolution.

All of this content is generated off the labor of hard working artists that spent hours honing their skills just so you can pat yourselves on the back with another bullshit video and disregard the humanity that makes art, art.

That is not even taking into account the massive impact on our environment and small communities this AI race is having. Google, Amazon and Microsoft pariahs go to great lengths to exploit whatever untapped cheap land they can get their hands on for the sake of hyperscale data centers with massive resource demands that negatively impact the people living around them.

Tech Won’t Save Us - Data Vampires Series

Then seeing it all similtaneously make a ton of money for the same fucking tech bilionaires that spit money into right wing politics to fund some harmful and pointless futuristic vision is just the icing on the cake.

Burn. It. All. Down.

Ultimately AI development could have gone in a different direction, I’m not opposed to the use of AI, but these none non-ethical and frankly anti-humanistic parasitic products that we seem to have gotten out of it, has no place in my future.
